Call for speakers for the Reducing Racial and Ethnic Disparities Conference
The Johnson County Disproportionate Minority Contact
Committee and several sponsors, are searching for speakers, conversation
leaders and academic writers to be part of the 2018 Reducing Racial and Ethnic
Disparities Conference this spring.
The conference, titled “Urgency
for Equity: Focusing on Youth-Serving Institutions,” will be held on April 19,
2018, at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Coralville, and will focus
on promising practices and programs that reduce inequities in youth serving
institutions.
The goal of the conference is to provide a space to discuss new
information and opportunities, as well as change institutions and organizations
to make evidence-based decisions to implement and monitor change in reducing
youth of color in their systems.
The conference will feature two nationally renowned keynote
speakers; cofounder of the National
Black Women's Justice Institute and the author of Black Stats: African
Americans by the Numbers in the Twenty-First Century and Push Out:
The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools, Monique W. Morris; and activist-scholar, practitioner, and educator, with extensive
experience in diversity issues in higher education, Michael
Benitez Jr. Breakout sessions and table talks will also address
disproportionality in juvenile justice, education, city and county government
departments, health, child welfare, and social services.
Those interested in presenting and adding greater depth to the conversations either by speaking or submitting academic papers should submit the following information:

Those with a broad variety of experiences and research are encouraged to submit proposals and papers and should be working to promote inclusivity of all populations in their communities from different backgrounds.
Proposals and papers should be emailed to ldeloach@co.johnson.ia.us by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018. Applicants will be notified by March 9.
The conference is hosted by the Johnson County Disproportionate Minority Contact Committee, Johnson County Social Services, the University of Iowa’s Social and Education Policy Research Program and the City of Iowa City’s Office of Equity and Human Rights.
