Cause of death released after body found in extreme cold

The Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office has released the results of an autopsy completed on 24-year-old Paul Biagas, who's body was found lying in the snow on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018. 

The cause of death is being listed as hypothermia due to environmental cold exposure, and the manner of death as an accident. Biagas was also found to be acutely intoxicated at the time of death. 

The Iowa City Police Department has no further information to release.

On Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, at approximately 2 p.m. the Iowa City Police Department was dispatched to the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center, 220 South Gilbert St., for a death investigation. 

A male had been located laying in the snow outside of this address. On arrival officers verified that a male later identified as 24-year-old Paul J. Biagas was deceased. The Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to assist police. Family of the deceased was notified by the investigators from the Medical Examiner’s Office. Investigators have no reason to believe foul play was involved.

This case remains under investigation by the Iowa City Police Department and the Johnson County Medical Examiner. No further information is available at this time.
