Reminder: City transitioning to single stream recycling
The City of Iowa City will
no longer require that recycling be sorted for curbside pickup, starting Monday, Dec. 4, 2017.
Residents can place all of their recyclables in their
current blue recycling container, no need to sort.
The City is accepting the
same recyclable materials it always has – no glass and no plastic bags.
The company the City contracts with for recycling does not except either product. Glass is a safety hazard for workers, and plastic bags cause machinery damage when they become stuck in the sorting belts. A full list of accepted materials is available at www.icgov.org/recycling.
Larger recycling carts will be available in 2018, more information to come.
Watch the video for a look at where Iowa City recyclables go after they are picked up from the curb.
A refuse and recycling route has been piloting single stream recycling, but beginning Dec. 4 the entire City will begin using new single stream collection trucks. Communities that use single stream recycling, or combine materials in one container, benefit from increased participation.

City curbside services are available to all single family homes through four-plex apartment buildings. Anyone with a green City of Iowa City trash cart can utilize the curbside recycling program by contacting the City to obtain their blue recycling bin and instructions.
