No more sorting! City transitioning to single stream recycling
Beginning Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, the City of Iowa City will
no longer require that recycling be sorted for curbside pickup.
Residents can place all of their recyclables in their
current container, no need to sort it at the curb. The City is accepting the
same recyclable materials it always has – no glass and no plastic bags. For a full list of accepted materials, visit www.icgov.org/recycling.
Communities that use single stream recycling, or combine
materials in one container, benefit from increased participation. Skipping the
sorting is easier, therefore more people recycle more materials.
For now, residents should continue to use their 18-gallon bins. Larger carts will be available in 2018. Look for more information on new carts later.
The City has been evaluating switching to single stream methods for some time, and has reached the point where it makes financial and environmental sense.
City curbside services are available to all single family homes through four-plex apartment buildings. Anyone with a green City of Iowa City trash cart has access to curbside recycling.
