Summer is wrapping up at the Library, but you can still make the most of the time we have left! The Bookmobile Summer schedule continues through August 18 and the Summer Reading Program wraps up tomorrow.
Are you ready to redeem prizes for completing the Summer Reading Program, but you haven’t had a chance to stop by the Library? Stop by your nearest Bookmobile stop to redeem your prizes and keep the reading going by checking out a book on the go.
Speaking of prizes, if you are working on the Library’s 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program, keep in mind you can redeem these prizes on the Bookmobile as well.
Before Summer 2017 is in the books, we are teaming up the Iowa City Parks & Recreation to bring you a special storytime event at the Log Cabins in Upper City Park. The storytime will explore stories, games, and songs common during the time of the pioneers. Be sure to stick around for crafts, games and other activities. The Bookmobile will be on site and tours of the log cabins will also be offered.
Fall Bookmobile Schedule announced
While some wish it could be summer forever,
others are ready for cooler days, the changing colors of leaves and our Fall
Bookmobile Schedule!
While our Summer Bookmobile Schedule focused on serving children and visits
in highly visible locations, the Fall Schedule will focus on going to highly
populated areas, such as retail store parking lots. We’ll also attend Thursday
morning Tot Time at Mercer Park, retirement residencies and area preschools.
The Fall Schedule will run from August 28 through December 21. It features five stops on Monday, six on Tuesday, two on Wednesday and four on Thursday.
Please note that the Bookmobile won't be in service the afternoon of October 18 -- a Thursday -- because it will be at the Iowa Library Association Conference.
The Bookmobile also won;t be in service the afternoon of Wednesday, November 22 -- the day before Thanksgiving.
Be sure to save our Fall Bookmobile Schedule so you can visit us while we're out and about -- plus check out books and movies, pick up holds, and return Library items.
You WHEELY like the Bookmobile!
The Bookmobile racked up more than 1,000 miles visiting 24 sites
weekly around Iowa City during its summer schedule. Patrons got used to seeing us at city parks,
retirement communities, mobile home parks, elementary schools, and local
businesses.
The Bookmobile averaged about 2,800 visitors per month, with our
busiest stops having more than 300 visitors in an hour. We experienced
everything from mass Library Card signups at an elementary school to record
audience attendance numbers at this summer’s Stories in the Park.
We recently shared a photo of the Bookmobile's DVD collection on Instagram and encouraged followers picking up dinner to stop by and check out a movie from an at-home dinner-and-a-movie night. Minutes later, a patron did just that!
"For me, the high point of this summer’s Bookmobile service were
the visits to the Parties in the Park," Paul
Bethke of Children’s Services said.
"Not only was it enjoyable to have a different place to go each week, but
they were by far the most popular 'stop-of-the-day,' with visitor numbers more
than double, and often greater, then all the earlier stops combined. The
combination of first time visitors, those who’ve never been on a bookmobile
before (especially the adults!), and the 'regulars' who’ve come by at every one
of the Parties in the Park to say 'Hi!' have made it a very special part of the
day."
Editor's note: This newsletter was resent to correct the previous newsletter that stated the Fall Bookmobile Schedule included four stops on Friday instead of Thursday.
