Iowa City Landfill rate changes and a new secured load policy go into effect this Saturday
On July 1, 2017, minimum
charges and rates to recycle several items will increase at the Iowa City
Landfill and Recycling Center.
Minimum waste fees
will increase to $6.50 for Iowa City customers and $7 for other communities and
Johnson County residents
Televisions and
computer monitors cannot be landfilled and must be recycled. The Iowa City
Landfill and Recycling Center can recycle televisions and computer monitors, as
well as most other electronics. The Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore at
the East Side Recycling Center also recycles electronics on behalf of the City
of Iowa City. New recycling fees at the Iowa City Landfill and at the East Side
Recycling Center range from $3 to $17 per item.
The new rates are:
$3 for small items such as printers, stereos, VCRs and DVD players
$12 for televisions or computer monitors smaller than 18 inches (measured
diagonally from one corner to the opposite diagonal corner). Thisfee
includes computer components.
$17 for televisions or computer monitors 18 inches or larger (measured
diagonally from one corner to the opposite diagonal corner and all console
televisions). This fee includes computer components.Tire recycling fees
will increase to $0.15 per pound with a $3 minimum charge.
Beginning July 1, a
secured load policy will also go into effect in
order to reduce the amount of litter along Melrose Avenue, IWV Road, Hebl
Avenue and at the landfill site. All loads containing materials that are being
transported to the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center for processing
and/or disposal are required to be covered or secured in a manner that prevents
any part of the load from escaping the vehicle.
Methods of cover or securement include
but are not limited to tarps, cables, straps, cords or rope. For example, a
refrigerator should be strapped in but does not need to be covered. Covers that
are shredded or tied so loosely as to allow materials to fall or blow out will
be considered non-compliant. Customers will receive their first
warning at no cost; after the first no-cost warning, each violation of the
policy will immediately incur a $50 fee.
