A message from Library Director Susan Craig
The City and the County are currently seeking applications for the Board Of Trustees of the Iowa City Public Library for three six-year terms (one for a rural county resident, two for Iowa City residents) that begin July 1, 2017.
The Board has nine members, eight from Iowa City and one from rural Johnson County. Every three years, three new members are appointed.
Board members set Library policy, plan for the future of the Library, and advocate for Library needs. The Library Director reports directly to the Board.
Information about the rural county position can be found here; choose Iowa City Public Library Board of Trustees. Applications for Iowa City residents can be found here. Applications may also be picked up at the City Clerk’s Office, 410 E Washington St, or the Help Desk at the Library, 123 S. Linn St.
Applicants must be 18 years or older.
Celebrate UNESCO International Jazz Day at ICPL
Join the Iowa City Public Library as we celebrate UNESCO International
Jazz Day from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 30, in Meeting Room A, with “Jazz in
the Fight for Civil Rights: Jazz as Activist Music.”
During the Civil Rights movement, many musicians joined
African-Americans in using their musical voice as a catalyst in demanding
change in America. While popular artists such as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye
and James Brown were more overt in voicing their opposition to the status quo
through their music, the more subtle sonic contributions that jazz musicians
made to this righteous cause are often overlooked.
Through a combination of live performance, spoken remark and a visual
presentation, “Jazz in the Fight for Civil Rights: Jazz as Activist Music” will
highlight three of the more prevalent examples of jazz music’s alignment with
the African-American fight for civil rights and the backstory behind their
creation. Musicians featured include Dr. Damani Phillips from the University of
Iowa on saxophone and vocals; Steve Shanley from Coe College on piano; Blake
Shaw, a graduate student at the University of Iowa on bass; and Jim Dreier of
the University of Iowa on drums.
This
event is co-sponsored by the Iowa City Public Library and the Iowa City UNESCO
City of Literature.

Have you seen our new Bookmobile?
A great big thank you and beep of the horn to everyone who joined us for our National Bookmobile Day celebration on April 12 at Mercer Park!
More than 400 people welcomed the Bookmobile to Iowa City, touring the brand new vehicle, which rolled into Iowa City from Colorado that very morning. We were happy to partner with our friends from Antelope Lending Library for a celebration that also included vehicles from the Iowa City Fire Department, the Iowa City Police Department, Iowa City Transit, Table-to-Table, the University of Iowa Mobile Museum, and Don Diego Tacos.
Activities were provided by the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department, Zen
Den Yoga, and massage therapist Jamie Nevins, with live music from The
Dandelion Stompers.
The Bookmobile's summer schedule begins June 1, but you don't have to wait that long to see it in action. The Bookmobile will hit the streets next month, circulating materials and giving tours. Check our May calendar for stops near you.
The Bookmobile's Summer Schedule, which operates June 1 through Aug. 18, can be found here.
