Iowa City to “Welcome the World” with fireworks, food & fun during cyclo-cross opening ceremony
Iowa City will kick off a four-day cyclo-cross celebration beginning Thursday Sept. 22, 2016 with an opening ceremony featuring a huge fireworks display, live entertainment and a special bike ride for kids.
The opening ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Terry Trueblood Recreation Area, 579 McCollister Blvd., located just south of Iowa City.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase during the celebration. Children are invited to participate in a kids’ bike ride around the lake at 6 p.m., cyclo-cross world athletes will be introduced at 7 p.m., and a silent auction will run throughout the evening until 8:30 p.m.
Stick around for the big fireworks finale. The City of Iowa City will put on a phenomenal fireworks display over the lake. Bring lawn chairs and blankets, but no coolers. The show will begin at dusk.
Opening Ceremony parking and transportation
No public parking will be allowed in any Terry Trueblood parking lot.
Instead, parking will be available at Napoleon Park and the City of Iowa City Streets facility, located just north of the Terry Trueblood Recreation Area. A complementary shuttle will run continually between the parking areas and the celebration. See the included map for stop locations.
World Cup tickets and parking
Cyclo-cross races will be held Sept. 23-25 at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. Tickets are required for the world cup series on Saturday and can be purchased at all Johnson County MidWestOneBank locations, local bike shops and onsite at the fairgrounds. Free world cup admission is also included with the purchase of any Northside Oktoberfest ticket.
Limited on-site parking is available for $10 at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. Free parking will be available downtown with a free shuttle service between Tower Place Parking Ramp, Dubuque Street Parking Ramp, Capitol Street Parking Ramp, Oktoberfest and the fairgrounds.
Iowa City is one of only two North American cities to host 2016 Cyclo-Cross World Cup. The competition will be broadcast to an estimated 8 million people in more than 35 countries.
