Community events planned for Black History Month
A variety of activities are planned in Iowa City to
commemorate and celebrate Black History Month in February. All events are open
to the public at no charge, although donations will be accepted.
United Action for Youth Teen Center, 355 Iowa Avenue, will
offer attendees an opportunity to express themselves through the arts while
learning more about black history through music, poetry and art. The event is
scheduled Friday, Feb. 12 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
A soul food dinner will be served from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday,
Feb. 19 at City High, 1900 Morningside Drive. Entertainment will also be
provided.
The following day, on Saturday, Feb. 20, a “Living Museum
with the Dream Center” will be performed at the Robert A. Lee Recreation
Center, 220 S. Gilbert Street. Youth will dress as historical figures and
provide visitors with an interpretation of black history. Doors open at 5:30
p.m., with activities scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Broadway Neighborhood Center at 2105 Broadway Street
will be the site of a mobile health clinic on Thursday, Feb. 25 from 5:30 to 7

New Creations International Church, 2929 E. Court Street,
will host a Unity Concert on Sunday, Feb. 28, beginning at 3 p.m.
The events are a collaborative effort of local agencies,
committees, volunteers, and community members, and are sponsored by the
Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County, Black Voices Project, City High -
Gworld, Dream Center, Iowa City Human Rights Commission, United Action for
Youth, New Creations International Church, Iowa City Police Department Community
Outreach, and Johnson County Social Services.
