Green to Go Community Health Fairs Support Iowans
Access to fresh, nutritious food plays an important role in supporting the health and well-being of Iowa families. Through our Be Well. Eat Well. initiative, Iowa Total Care works year-round to improve access to healthy foods and resources that help communities thrive.
In August, Iowa Total Care hosted two Green to Go Community Health Fairs in partnership with local organizations. On August 6, we joined Siouxland Community Health Center at its Rock the Center event in Sioux City. On August 23, we partnered with Back 2 School Iowa during its Back 2 School Bash in Des Moines. Families received free fresh produce and connected with community resources focused on health and wellness.
These events helped make healthy food more accessible while connecting Iowans to information and services that support healthier lifestyles. The Green to Go Community Health Fairs are one part of Iowa Total Care's broader Be Well. Eat Well. initiative, which also supports community gardens, cooking classes, healthy recipes, and education that empowers families to make nutritious choices and stretch their food budgets.

Supporting Students and Families for a Successful School Year
As students across Iowa prepared to return to the classroom in August, Iowa Total Care partnered with community organizations to participate in back-to-school events that helped connect children and caregivers with supplies, health resources, and support services. These events provide more than backpacks and school essentials. They create opportunities to promote healthy starts, encourage school readiness, and connect families with programs that can help them thrive throughout the year. By meeting families where they are and working alongside community partners, Iowa Total Care continues to support the well-being of Iowa's children and helps build a strong foundation for academic success, health, and long-term achievement.

Wellpoint Celebrates 10 Years in Iowa
Earlier this summer, Wellpoint celebrated its 10-year anniversary in Iowa at its new Urbandale office location. Wellpoint employees, along with other key stakeholders throughout the state, gathered to reflect on the work that’s been accomplished because of these partnerships over the last decade.
During this celebration, Wellpoint employees also filled bags with essential supplies for people facing homelessness. Employees personally contributed to purchasing items like socks, flashlights, blankets, first aid kits, and more to fill the bags. Because of this effort, more than 200 full bags were donated between two organizations that support unhoused Iowans: Joppa in Des Moines and Humility Homes in Davenport.
Wellpoint serves meals, donates backpacks to Sudlow Middle School
During its back-to-school fair, Wellpoint served more than 300 meals to Sudlow Middle School students, their families, and teachers in Davenport.
50 backpacks filled with school supplies were also donated to the Davenport-based school, ready to give to students who may not otherwise have the resources.
The Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation awarded $937,086 to 16 Iowa organizations through its spring grant cycle, supporting projects that improve oral and overall health outcomes for Iowans.
Among the investments, a $200,000 grant will help launch a new dental hygiene training partnership between Community Health Care and Eastern Iowa Community College in Davenport. The project is expected to strengthen Iowa’s oral health workforce and expand access to care in eastern Iowa.
The Foundation also awarded $100,000 to Iowa KidSight to replace aging vision screening equipment, helping volunteers continue providing screenings for young children, especially in rural and underserved communities.
Fall grant recipients will be announced later this year following the completion of the Foundation’s current grant cycle. Learn more.
Celebrating a Health Access Hero in Iowa
Great care can make a difference far beyond the dental chair. That is why Sun Life U.S. and DentaQuest created the Health Access Hero Awards to recognize people who are helping improve access to care and make their communities healthier.
This year, one of those heroes is in Iowa.
Dr. Leonardo Marchini, DDS, of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics, was named a 2026 Health Access Hero for his work helping older adults and people with disabilities get the dental care they need. As professor and chair of Preventive and Community Dentistry and leader of the Geriatric and Special Needs Clinic, Dr. Marchini works with patients who may face limited mobility, transportation barriers and complex medical needs.
His work reflects the community focused care the Health Access Hero Awards were created to celebrate.
Each Health Access Hero receives a $10,000 donation to the charity of their choice. Dr. Marchini selected the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics’ Geriatric and Special Needs Program, allowing the award to continue supporting care, education and training in Iowa.
