Iowa HHS has released a draft of the Behavioral Health Service System Statewide Plan, marking a significant step forward in enhancing behavioral health care across the state. This draft plan outlines a comprehensive vision for the new Behavioral Health System, which is set to launch on July 1, 2025. It provides a clear roadmap for improving access, coordination, and quality of mental health and substance use disorder services in Iowa.
The draft Statewide Plan details key strategies and actionable tactics that will guide the system’s development over the next several years. These include expanding community-based services, integrating care across different health sectors, strengthening crisis response systems, and enhancing workforce development to ensure that Iowans receive timely, person-centered behavioral health care. The draft plan also addresses funding strategies, policy initiatives, and long-term sustainability efforts.
To ensure that the draft plan reflects the needs and priorities of the community, Iowa HHS is inviting public feedback. These feedback sessions will provide an opportunity for stakeholders—including individuals, families, providers, and advocates—to share their insights and recommendations. Feedback is welcomed in the feedback form or at the feedback sessions. Details on how to participate in these sessions can be found below:
