Mini Conference From San Jose State University
Coming March 21st

The School of Library Information at San Jose State University sponsors mini-conferences twice a year.  These events are conducted online, broadcast nationally, and bonus—they are always free!  Their first one this year is scheduled for Thursday March 21 (2:00-5:00PM CST) with a timely topic that libraries are talking about – AI – artificial intelligence

Conference Overview

From SJSU’s conference website: “How has artificial intelligence impacted library services, resources, and work so far? How have libraries responded to these evolving technologies to better support their communities? It's been over a year since generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT and Dall-E have been introduced in public spaces and consciousness, but AI has been around long before these tools.  Yet there are still lingering concerns, challenges, and considerations.  Join us for this free virtual conference to learn how libraries and library workers are engaging with artificial intelligence tools in their libraries from research support to information literacy to tech  services. The conversations held in the conference will address the practical implications of these tools in the library profession.”

Session Topics

Everyone is invited to participate in SJSU’s Library 2.0 Conferences, which are designed to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among information professionals worldwide. Each three-hour mini-conference consists of a keynote panel, 10-15 thirty-minute presentations, and a closing keynote.  Breakout sessions are expected to address these issues surrounding AI:

  • How artificial intelligence has specifically impacted library services, resources, and work so far
  • How libraries have responded to these evolving technologies to better support their communities
  • Specific challenges and considerations that libraries, library staff, and library leaders have faced with artificial intelligence.

Again, this is a free event, although you must register ahead of time if you plan to attend the live program and / or if you want to receive links to the recordings afterward.

ILOC Recordings

ILOC Conference Recordings Ready To Watch

Last month, the State Library of Iowa held our annual online conference called ILOCIowa Libraries Online Conference.  We saw impressive attendance numbers this year at 1,233!  And we now have all the recordings from the conference available to re-watch or to watch for the first time.  With all thanks to Samantha Bouwers and State Library Resource Technicians, who processed the recordings and posted them for viewing.  Let’s just say … it was a lot!

The full complement of ILOC sessions is now available to view via IALearns for credit (simply search for "ILOC 2024") Or find the entire playlist on the State Library’s Continuing Education YouTube Channel.  All sessions are cross-posted, with the exception of Jay Turner's morning keynote address; for contractual reasons, his presentation is only accessible on IA Learns.

ILOC is a big-deal education event for our staff to plan and produce, so I want to allow some space here to share some testimonials from attendees who enjoyed the day 😊

  • These are always great sessions, and being able to go back and watch ones we missed via recording is much appreciated
  • Thank you for bringing this day of learning that has provided so many ideas and resources that can be used at our small library
  • This year's ILOC will help me be a better advocate for the library and will help me encourage board members to become better advocates
  • Some really good ideas and the speakers all fit the theme of the conference
  • The fact that we can spend time in our buildings, while connecting with others through ILOC, and getting practical application out of it. is simply wonderful

Thanks to the ILOC Team, all State Library staff,
all conference speakers—and all of you—
for contributing to another successful
Innovative Libraries Online Conference!

Webinar Series From RIPL

stats

Starting In March

Here's news about an ambitious online series of classes with something for everyone. 12 Months To Better Library Data includes curriculum from the Research Institute For Public Libraries, also known as RIPL.  For seasoned library managers, for students of statistics, for all library staff who love to gather and analyze data, this multi-part series is sure to be valuable and loaded with CE credits.  And this bonus incentive--these classes are free 😊

Made possible by funding from the Mellon Foundation, 12 Months To Better Library Data teaches how to use statistics to better serve your community.  The curriculum is based on these steps involved in conducting a program evaluation:

  • Identify the purpose of your evaluation
  • Plan your evaluation
  • Collect data
  • Analyze data
  • Use data for management, program improvement, strategic planning, and advocacy

The first quarter of this series takes place March through May.  In the first quarter, instructors will focus on the Identify and Planning steps noted above. To learn more of the details and to register for each class, click on each class title below.

During the second quarter, instruction will turn to collecting and analyzing data.  In the third quarter, the focus turns to using data for decision-making, program improvement, and advocacy.  Finally, the fourth quarter looks at developing a data-informed culture in your library, including a discussion of the competing needs of patron privacy vs the need to guide service design and delivery.  More information about the second, third, and fourth quarter webinars will be available soon.

All classes are intended to be interactive; attendees are asked to come ready to participate in a variety of learning activities, some of which be small group discussions in breakout rooms.  These webinars will be recorded, with recordings expected to be available within two business days of each session.  But to receive the link to any of the recordings, you must first register for the live webinars. Please contact info@ripleffect.org with questions.
