The state trauma program staff are able to provide technical assistance upon request. Technical assistance provides hospitals the opportunity to have trauma policies, protocols, processes, and guidelines reviewed for compliance with trauma program criteria with no fear of regulatory disciplinary action. One of the main goals of technical assistance is to ensure program success during the re-verification process. Technical assistance can be provided at any point during the verification period. Along with providing subject matter expertise during the review, trauma program staff can also provide sample documents upon request and discuss success stories from other facilities. We are happy to work alongside our hospital trauma programs to ensure their continued success in providing optimal care to injured patients across Iowa.
Q: Is the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) part of the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)?
A: While IHA and the HHS trauma program have a collaborative relationship, they are entirely separate entities.
The Iowa Hospital Association is a nonprofit association that provides advocacy, education and information to its members. It represents and advocates health policy issues benefiting Iowans before the state legislature, U.S. Congress and regulatory bodies. Their mission is to represent Iowa hospitals and support them in achieving their missions and goals.
HHS is a government department within the executive branch of Iowa's state government structure. The Bureau of Emergency Medical and Trauma Services (BEMTS) is positioned within the Public Health Division of Iowa HHS and works to protect the health of Iowans in need of EMS and trauma care in Iowa. Iowa HHS is the lead agency responsible for the implementation of Iowa Code as it relates to the EMS and trauma systems of care. The BEMTS EMS program is responsible for the regulation of EMS providers, service programs, and training programs. The BEMTS trauma program works alongside Iowa's trauma centers and utilizes trauma registry data, hospital verification, injury prevention, and performance improvement resources.
Are you aware which individuals have access to your ImageTrend Patient Registry? With the high turnover in trauma program staff, it is good practice to periodically check the list of users to ensure the right individuals with the right credentials have access to your registry. As a "hospital administrator" in ImageTrend, you have the authority to add/edit users. It is recommended to delete any users who are no longer working in your trauma program that should not have access to the information.
There is also the option to add new users, if you have additional staff who need access to the trauma patient registry. Click on "Add User" in the top right corner of the Users tab.

Are you prepared to care for a severely injured motorcyclist? Maybe two, three, or more injured bikers found on one scene? Does your service specifically practice crash scene approach, mechanism of injury recognition, helmet removal, how and when to move a motorcycle to access the patient?
Overview: Over 50% of all motorcycle crashes will result in serious injury or fatality. EMS providers must be prepared to assess the crash scene, prevent rescuer injury and accurately triage and treat the injured. The Two Wheel Trauma concept was created in early 1986 by three experienced EMS providers in rural Clay County, Iowa. Anita Bailey, Slider Gilmore, and Frank Prowant saw the need for a specialized CEH program to focus on motorcycle trauma. Wayne Wierson, an avid motorcyclist, joined the faculty in 2005 to present Share the Road.
Goal: The Two Wheel Trauma program intends to reduce fatalities and improve the survival rates for those injured in crashes involving motorcycles, bicycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and other vehicles of similar designs, through prevention and education.
