Power of Partnerships: Meskwaki Nation
ICN partnered with Meskwaki Nation, who was one of our subgrantees for the federal broadband award in 2010. Prior to the grant, the tribe held strategic planning sessions where individuals discussed the need to increase broadband.
In 2019, Janice Eagle Hawk was highlighted in The Technology Association of Iowa's (TAI) 2019 Catalysts Series. She explained bringing broadband Internet and access to the Meskwaki Settlement and how broadband access improved the tribe members’ quality of life.
"There’s been a lot of progression over time. From an IT perspective, when we first started we had a data center that could only furnish about 2 terabytes of storage. By 2015 we needed something bigger. We needed redundant data centers to help serve different departments and their case management programs." Read Janice Eagle Hawk's entire interview.

The partnership between ICN and Meskwaki Nation was also highlighted in the 2017 BroadbandUSA The Power of Broadband Partnership: A Toolkit for Local and Tribal Government.

Network Performance...A Large Bandwidth Event
If you speak with our CTO, Scott Pappan, he will tell you about one of the largest single bandwidth events our Network experienced. In January 2017, many of our customers took to the Internet to stream the Presidential Inauguration using different content providers like Netflix and Google.
An Internet Service Provider does not expect every customer to use their Internet connection at the same time. That is what happened during the Presidential Inauguration. Our Network showed an increase in traffic, but our customers were able to continue to stream with no issues.
- Many streaming providers have peering agreements setup with the ICN, so that traffic doesn't travel on the public Internet. Peering reduces the distance the data must travel, which results in lower latency and an improved user experience.
While the Inauguration took place, our peering feeds increased significantly. The graphic below, which was included in our 2017 ICN Insider, shows that sudden increase in traffic at one peering location. Our peering agreements helped our users experience the Network with no issues.
