As cyber risks increase, schools should adopt a proactive strategy rather than waiting for something bad or unexpected to occur. Here are 3 security strategies schools can take to protect their ICN Internet service.
- Install a Next Generation Firewall
- Subscribe to DDoS Mitigation Service to Protect the Network
- Keep Training the Human, Take Steps to Reduce Human Error

Congratulations to our Statewide Youth Broadband Advisory Council (SYBAC) students that have completed their online cybersecurity training from Fortinet.
Throughout the school year, the students worked through the Network Security Expert level 1 certificate.
We think it is great that our SYBAC students are making cybersecurity a priority!
👉 Learn more about our SYBAC program. We will begin taking applications for 2023/2024 in late April. Encourage your students to apply.

New Appointments Made to ICN's Commission
We have new faces on the Iowa Telecommunications and Technology Commission (ITTC), which has the sole authority to supervise the management, development, and operation of the ICN. On March 3, Governor Reynolds announced the following appointments to the ITTC:
- Carmine Boal, Polk
- Term will begin on May 1.
- Brett Mason, Linn
- Term began on February 21.
- Steve Olson, Chair, Clinton
- Chair term began on February 21.
- Denise Sturm, Polk
- Term began on February 21.
All appointments are subject to Senate confirmation.
We want to thank our previous Commission members. In January, Barb Kniff McCulla started her role as a State Representative. In late January, Krista Wenzel submitted her resignation after accepting a new employment position out-of-state. We also want to thank Tim Lapointe for his dedication to the ITTC and the ICN. He has served on the Commission since 1999, and his term will be completed on April 30.
30 Years of Innovation
One of the most important pieces of celebrating our anniversary is thanking our customers, partners, and others that have had an impact. ICN would not be successful without this support.

"Other states struggle to develop and build out their Emergency Services IP Network or ESInet. Ours was built in the 90's through the ICN, we just didn't know it yet. The availability of the ICN has helped us in our transition to Next Generation 911 in the State."
|
"The ICN provides [us] with the most cost effective and efficient connection available, allowing us to send our programming out from our Johnston studios to each of our Iowa-based broadcast transmitters." |
