The Iowa Department of Human Rights (DHR) brings strength to Iowa's rich heritage.  Our three divisions - Community Action Agencies, Community Advocacy and Services, and Criminal and Juvenile Justice Planning - work to reduce cultural, social, and economic barriers to opportunities for Iowans to succeed.



MLK Virtual Celebration

The Iowa Department of Human Rights’ Office on the Status of African-Americans will host its 34th annual celebration honoring the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 16, 2023, at 10:45 a.m.  The event will be streamed via the Department of Human Rights' Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/iowadepthumanrights

Open Enrollment Ends January 15 for Marketplace Healthcare Coverage

The last day to enroll in or change 2023 Marketplace health insurance is January 15, 2023.  Under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, more people may qualify even if they weren't in the past, and there may be more savings.   To be eligible to enroll through the Maretplace, you:

IRS Accessible Forms

The Internal Revenue Service offers hundreds of tax forms and publications for people who use assistive technology such as screen reading software, refreshable Braille displays, voice recognition software, other languages, and other accessible formats.

Free Tax Return Preparation 

The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including:

  • households that generally make $60,000 or less;
  • persons with disabilities;
  • limited English-speaking taxpayers; and 
  • people who are 60 years of age and older.

IRS VITA tax sites are located throughout Iowa at partner organizations such as United Way, universities, and community organizations.  To locate a site near you, use this locator tool, or call 800-906-9887.
