Job Description:
This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department for the Blind. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section. Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise. The Iowa Department for the Blind (IDB) seeks applicants for the position of Service Specialist for the Blind 2/Business Counselor in its Business Enterprise Program. This person, domiciled in Polk, Linn or Johnson County, travels Iowa and joins a small team which supports BEP operators statewide. The Business Counselor provides training and guidance on business and equipment operations, customer service, equipment maintenance, inventory, record keeping, inspections, and related issues. The ideal candidate will possess a strong knowledge of business management, have mechanical abilities, and good attention to detail. The candidate will believe in the competency and capabilities of blind people and be able to teach program participants and trainees to perform their own maintenance and provide high-quality customer service. The ideal candidate will also possess self-motivation with great time management and interpersonal communication skills in-person, by text, email and meeting applications. This person works with the BEP team, operators and building management to solve problems and identify solutions. Demonstrating the ability to work with and instruct, inform, and educate people of varying backgrounds and levels of education is a must. Occasional overnights for multiple-stop visits or conferences/training may be expected. Experience in the following areas is not necessary but will be taken into consideration: vending, both operations and maintenance; inspections in any field; home or building maintenance; teaching; counseling; inventory management; food safety; money management or budgeting; record keeping; working independently; customer service; business management; and employee development.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from an accredited college or university and experience equal to one year of full-time professional or paraprofessional work in human service fields such as: social services; nursing; personnel; vocational rehabilitation; education; psychology; or intangible sales, interviewing, recruiting, and promotion; recreation, public information, volunteer service for public or private organizations, fund raising, or ministry in a recognized faith or denomination;
OR
graduation from an accredited college university with a major emphasis in library science or liberal arts and at least one year of library work experience;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the equivalent of one year of full-time work experience (as listed above) for each year of the required education to a maximum substitution of four years
