"The Keys to the City" November 17

The fourth and final webinar in the 2021 Boardroom series is scheduled for November 17 (6:00-7:30PM) Titled “The Keys to the City.”  November’s board education program underscores the importance of healthy relationships between city officials and library boards.  Leading this discussion is Patrick Callahan of Callahan Municipal Consultants.

“With city elections wrapping up in early November and new city officials and/or administrations on the horizon, now is a great time to be thinking about good communication habits between the library board and its partners in city government. Drawing on over 45 years of experience in public administration, Patrick Callahan will highlight best practices for library boards and cities as they work together to better their communities. We'll be reminded about the library board's role and the city's role in running a library, hear stories from both sides about what contributes to a successful working relationship, and be encouraged to start good communication habits…”

Attending this webinar satisfies Standard #8 “every member of the library board participates in continuing education each year.”  Whether newly appointed to library boards or experienced members, this Boardroom program "The Keys to the City" is sure to be beneficial for library trustees representing communities of all sizes.

Previewing the ILOC Conference ...

ILOC Logo

Coming in January 2022

There's a new name and a new logo for a long-standing conference sponsored by the State Library.  The new name is Iowa Libraries Online Conference—ILOC for short.  But you can expect the same great programming when we bring you next year's conference on January 20, 2022.

Every January since 2008, Iowa library staff and boards have logged into the State Library’s all-day online conference.  It’s a great way to stay connected over the winter months, as travel becomes unpredictable.  Plus, logging into a virtual conference in cold, snowy January holds lots of warm appeal.

ILOC started as a virtual conference, initially designed for the needs of small libraries in mind. Today libraries of all sizes find value in the programming line-up and are able to scale up or scale down the ideas presented.  And that’s more easily done because this virtual conference is designed and presented by Iowa librarians.  Plus there is typically an evening program designed for library trustees.

Call For Proposals

So today an early call for proposals for the 2022 ILOC Conference on January 20th.
Our theme is “Make Room For YES: Overcome Challenges & Take Advantage of New Opportunities."

Samantha Bouwers provides this description “As communities reopen and libraries establish new ways of doing things, we invite ILOC conference participants to consider what they can say “YES” to in their library in order to better support their communities.  Maybe it’s a new program, a grant opportunity, or a new partnership. The possibilities are endless! The ILOC conference will encourage attendees to implement new ideas and practices in their libraries.”

At this writing, we are soliciting proposals from librarians who said “Yes” to something new and want to share their stories with others.  Submit a proposal by using the form below.  Then save the date—January 20, 2022—and say YES to attending the State Library’s ILOC Conference in the new year!

Next Big Ideas Book Discussion

BIBD Nov

Rituals Roadmap by Erica Keswin

The fourth and final Big Ideas Book Discussion for this year is scheduled for November 19th (9:30-11:30AM) The title up for discussion is Rituals Roadmap: The Human Way to Transform Everyday Routines Into Workplace Magic by Erica Keswin (c2021)  From the author of Bring Your Human to Work, Keswin’s latest book Rituals Roadmap is a guidebook for boosting workplace morale, showing how using workplace rituals can build stronger connections among staff and more enjoyment in their work.

This review from Amazon: “From morning coffee to weekly staff meetings, our lives are steeped in ritual. Rituals Roadmap combines scientific research with examples from the most human companies—like Starbucks, Microsoft, Chipotle and LinkedIn—showing how they establish rituals during meetings, employee orientations, and daily interactions among coworkers.  Rituals Roadmap is your blueprint for creating a workplace full of engaged, connected employees who … stay at their jobs long-term…”

In Big Ideas Book Discussions, State Library staff and partners facilitate discussions using books outside of library management, but with plenty of application to library management. Choosing books on leadership, civic engagement, presentation skills, etc. we connect those ideas with public library service.

So with the holidays just ahead—complete with holiday traditions—this is good timing to talk about traditions in our work lives.  We encourage participants to purchase books used throughout the Big Ideas series for your own collections. And join us for the next good read: Rituals Roadmap.
