Attention Operators, earn up to twelve hours of continuing education credit for attending a free training about optimizing your wastewater plant’s performance!
This training series, Reducing Nutrient Discharges Through Low-Cost Operational Changes, will teach you how to improve your mechanical wastewater treatment system’s biological nutrient removal performance without capital upgrades. Each training session is free, and attendees can earn Continuing Education Credits for each session.
The training sessions will be led by one of the nation’s premier subject experts, Grant Weaver of CleanWaterOps, who has helped facilities across the country reduce their nitrogen and phosphorus discharges using their existing facilities and equipment.
Session Information:
All sessions will be held on Thursdays from 10:00 – 11:45 AM Central.
- Session 1, August 12: Optimizing Nitrogen Removal in Activated Sludge WWTPs – Introduction/Overview
- Session 2, August 19: Optimizing Phosphorus Removal in Activated Sludge WWTPs – Introduction/Overview
- Session 3, August 26: Optimizing Nitrogen and Phosphorus Removal in Activated Sludge WWTPs – Review
- Session 4, September 2: Optimizing Nitrogen and Phosphorus Removal in Activated Sludge WWTPs – Case Studies, Part 1
- Session 5, September 9: Optimizing Nitrogen and Phosphorus Removal in Activated Sludge WWTPs – Case Studies, Part 2
- Session 6, September 16: Optimizing Nitrogen and Phosphorus Removal in EPA Region 7 – Participants’ Wastewater Treatment Plants
Operators who attend this webinar training series are eligible to receive 2.0 operator hours (0.2 CEU) per session. Operators will receive a certificate of completion for each individual session. Please contact Laurie Sharp with any questions regarding certification at Laurie.Sharp@dnr.iowa.gov.

This training webinar series is brought to you by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. EPA Region 7, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Kansas Department of Health and the Environment, Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and CleanWaterOps, as part of U.S. EPA’s National Study on Nutrient Removal and Secondary Technologies.
The training series, Reducing Nutrient Discharges Through Low-Cost Operational Changes, also coincides with the launch of the new Wastewater Optimization Program in Iowa. This program aids wastewater treatment facilities to optimize their treatment process for energy savings and improved nutrient reduction through partnership with a team of qualified wastewater experts. This program is a partnership with the Iowa Wastewater and Waste to Energy Program (IWWERP) at the University of Iowa, the Iowa Water Environment Association (IAWEA), and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
The program is actively looking for interested facilities to participate in this effort at no cost to the facility. If you are interested in participating in the Wastewater Optimization Program, please contact Dr. Craig Just at craig-just@uiowa.edu or Adam Schnieders at adam.schnieders@dnr.iowa.gov.
Online and virtual training opportunities are being created and offered through community colleges, state industry associations, national industry associations, EPA, and other state industry partners. All operators should continue to monitor their emails and the Training Calendar on the Iowa DNR Operator Certification Database. Look at the calendar often, as there are new opportunities posted throughout the week.
Please contact Laurie Sharp at (515) 725-0284 with any questions concerning operator certification training.
