Job Description

The Iowa Library for the Blind and Print Disabled is seeking applicants for the position of Librarian 1 to fill the role of Access Services Librarian.  This position oversees the daily operation of access services including patron services, circulation and collection maintenance.

Duties and responsibilities to include:

Access Services

  • Identify, analyze and anticipate the needs of patrons; develop courses of action to meet needs by reviewing patron accounts through the use of the library's integrated library system including patron transfers
    1. Manage patron accounts through the use of the library's integrated library system including patron transfers
    2. Oversee the processing of new patron application and patron transfers
    3. Oversee interlibrary loan circulation
  • Accesses relevant and accurate information to interpret eligibility requirements and apply them to patron application and patron transfers
  • Provide Reader Advisory services to patrons by conducting reference and reader advisory interviews to guide patrons to reading materials and information resources
  • Provide high-quality training in the use of specialized formats including digital talking books, digital players, BARD, library's online public catalog and other library services
  • Assists library patrons by explaining the arrangement and resources of the library and informing patrons of special books or materials to promote an understanding of the library and its resources
  • Provides reference services for library patrons; locates requested subject information through catalogs, lists, and retrieval systems
  • Locates literature on designated subjects by systematically and comprehensively searching for information on the subject to formulate bibliographic references, summaries, or direct answers.
    1. Enter patron book lists and requests into the library system
  • Work regularly scheduled shifts at the Library's Information Desk providing Reader's Advisory and Reference Services
  • Assist in the integration of information literacy concepts into the full range of library services
  • Oversee Audio Book and Braille Duplication on Demand processes ensuring the electronic and audio collections are accessible to patrons
    1. Processing the daily circulation of all library formats

Collection Management

  • Ensure the physical library collections are easily accessible by the public by managing the Braille, Print/Braille and Large Print collections including the maintenance of physical library collection
    1. Maintain Braille, Print/Braille and Large Print collection stacks by adjusting and consolidating
    2. Inspect the quality of materials for damage and process overdue materials
  • Evaluates, collects and synthesizes information from diverse resources to determine needs within the library collection
  • Assess and respond to diversity in user needs, user communities and user preferences to determine needs within the library collection
  • Assist Library Director in collection maintenance; including weeding projects

Outreach and Education

  • Participate in Library and Department projects, programs and meetings
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of library programs and outreach as needed
  • Update job skills that enhance ability to serve patrons

 

Minimum Qualification Requirements

A Master's degree in Library Science from an accredited school of Library Science;

OR
an undergraduate degree from an accredited four year college or university and one year of full-time professional librarian or archives experience (i.e., similar to work indicated in this description).
