EPA Virtual Meeting Series on Potential Microbial and Disinfection Byproducts Rule Revisions

From EPA 6/24/2021

“EPA is currently seeking information and public input to inform potential regulatory revisions of eight National Primary Drinking Water Regulations included in Microbial and Disinfection Byproducts (MDBP) rules following the EPA’s Third Six-Year Review. As a part of gathering public feedback, EPA initiated public engagements in October 2020 to solicit input on further improving public health protection from MDBPs in drinking water. EPA is continuing to engage the public throughout 2021 with a series of virtual public meetings of which each focuses on specific MDBP topics identified through public comments and information.

Registration for the July 15, 2021, virtual meeting focusing on drinking water distribution systems and finished drinking water storage topics is now available on EPA’s MDBP Revisions website

For any questions, please contact MDBPRevisions@epa.gov.”

Annual WS Operation Fee Bill in the Mail

The annual Water Supply Operation Fee bills were mailed last week, and are due September 1st.  The fee is $25.00 for transient noncommunity systems.  For nontransient noncommunity and community systems, the fee is $25.00 or 11.40 cents per capita per year, whichever is greater.  The amount of fee collected statewide is capped at $350,000, as it has been since 1995.  The money is used to match federal grants which support the public water supply program.

Iowa Public Drinking Water Program Annual Compliance Report for 2020 Available

The State of Iowa Public Drinking Water Program Annual Compliance Report for 2020 is available on our website. Under the 1996 reauthorized Safe Drinking Water Act, the DNR is required to publish an annual report of the status of its public drinking water program and to submit the report to EPA by July 1st.

The report was compiled by the staff of the DNR, using data collected in 2020 from all active public water supplies in the state.  The report contains a summary of the program, a description of the requirements that systems must meet, the year’s violation statistics, and the list of the systems with each health-based standard or major monitoring or reporting violation incurred during the year.

The photographs in the report are from Drinking Water State Revolving Loan Fund projects, primarily those that were completed or inspected during the year.  The maps depict the public water supply system universe in Iowa and the locations of the systems that incurred the violations of health-based standards and the major monitoring and reporting violations.  The maps are also separately listed on the website.

Iowa had 1,848 active public water supply systems in 2020. Of those systems, 96.8% were in compliance with all health-based drinking water standards, and 83.8% were in compliance with all major monitoring and reporting requirements. There were no waterborne disease outbreaks or deaths attributed to the drinking water at any active public water supply in Iowa during the year.
