Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (IESBVI) is currently seeking applicants for several exciting opportunities to work with Blind/Visually Impaired students aged 17- 21 in our 4PLUS (4 Post-senior Learning for Ultimate Success) program based out of the Council Bluffs, IA campus for the upcoming school year. This program provides extra transitional support between high school and college or work. Students in this program stay in residential dorms throughout the week from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon and participate in on-campus classroom settings and either work in the community or attend college classes at other times in the day.

Residential Counselor Primary Function: Under supervision from the Dean of Students, supervises blind and visually impaired 4Plus students. Supervision occurs during non-classroom hours (typically 3 pm to 11 pm) to provide instructional and recreational activities for proper social, physical, and intellectual development. Provides tutoring on nightly basis. Reinforces independent living skills including but not limited to personal care, food preparation, clothing management (laundry, sorting, identification), money management, personal organization (materials and time management) and household maintenance as well as social/emotional skills in preparation for transition to independent living.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in education, human services, or a related area. Three years of previous experience working with the Blind. Knowledge and experience of the needs of blind/visually impaired students, including familiarity of Braille, Orientation and Mobility skills and assistive technology for the Blind. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to identify student problems and to provide resolution to such problems.
Salary starting at $40,000 annually for an 195 day, school year contract.
Work Experience Coordinator (WEC)
Primary Function: Coordinates the Work Experience Program for students who are blind and visually impaired enrolled in the 4PLUS Program on our Council Bluffs campus. Provides small group instruction in the classroom setting on employment topics, and makes site visits to assist, monitor and evaluate student progress in the work experience setting. Serves as the liaison between employers and the 4PLUS program to establish and maintain work experience opportunities for students in the program. Serves as an advocate for students.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in education plus experience using a computer and other office equipment required. Candidates must meet State of Iowa teacher licensure requirements with endorsements in Special Education (grades 5-12) and Work Experience Coordinator by the time of appointment. Candidates who do not possesses the Work Experience Coordinator endorsement will be considered, but will be required to complete the endorsement within 1-2 years from the time of appointment. Candidates must be able to travel regularly in a designated region and occasionally work outside of regular school hours.
Salary will be determined by the successful applicant’s educational and teaching experience.
(BA degree - $44,897-$69,658; MA degree – $52,701-$81,255).
Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)
Primary Function: Provides appropriate transition support and/or instruction to students aged 17-21 with visual impairments participating in the 4PLUS Program located on the Council Bluffs campus. Teaches independent living skills, financial management, cooking. Other areas that might be involved include recreation and leisure, compensatory, and care skills in the dorms. Formulates appropriate educational objective, activities, evaluation, goals, and instruction. Reports student growth and programs to parents periodically. Participates as a member of multidisciplinary teams for educational planning, evaluations and development of IEPs. May lead IEP meetings.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in education plus experience using a computer and other office equipment required. Candidates must meet State of Iowa teacher licensure requirements with an endorsement in visual impairment by the time of appointment. Candidates possessing a special education endorsement may also qualify, but must complete the visual impairment endorsement within three years of appointment (financial assistance available for necessary coursework).
