The Iowa Department of Natural Resources recently completed a process improvement event focusing on the submittal of Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs). Nearly 17,000 DMRs are submitted by permittees to the DNR annually. These reports provide DNR staff the data necessary to determine facility compliance with standards to protect human health and the environment. The team of inspectors, permitting staff, and data reviewers met virtually six times over a period of two months to analyze the entire DMR submittal process, looking to improve efficiencies and reduce errors. One of the many highlights of the event was the development of a new guidance document, Instructions for Filing a DMR, intended for permittees to successfully navigate through the DMR reporting process without errors. The new Instructions for Filing a DMR document is also available on the DNR’s DMR Forms website.
Questions regarding DMR submittal should be directed to the Field Office staff listed on the DMR Forms website.
