Amazing Iowa Women ...

Exhibit

Now as a Traveling Exhibit

Thanks to Roslin Thompson with Knoxville Public Library, we've learned of a traveling exhibit available to Iowa’s libraries.  The exhibit promotes the book Amazing Iowa Women, written by Professor Katy Swalwell at Iowa State University and illustrated by various Iowa women artists.

The traveling exhibit consists of 14 large two-sided retractable vinyl banners, banner stands, carrying cases, and a storage bin. In addition, the exhibit includes free supplemental curriculum and QR codes for an educational interactive viewing experience.  The photo at left depicts one of the posters in Knoxville's display.

Roslin Thompson writes “The standing posters are double-sided and easy to set up, although a library booking this exhibit will need to consider the available space to display it.  Our Friends group generously donated 50 copies of the book which they purchased from Raygun (50% discount when bought wholesale) We give them out when patrons complete an activity sheet designed by staff…”

Amazing Iowa Women is a children’s book, a compilation of largely unsung women who made impressive societal contributions throughout the state’s history.  If you are interested in reserving the exhibit, contact Katy Swalwell katyswalwell@gmail.com.

RayGun is a screen printing store with its origins in Des Moines; over the years, the store has expanded into five other locations including Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.  RayGun sells clothing and accessories, kitchen items, drinkware and dishware, books, and more.  If you haven’t yet purchased Amazing Iowa Women, it is available on the RayGun website and sells for $20.00

Survey From Iowa Dept of Public Health

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) coordinates a wide variety of programs on different health topics and emerging issues. The State Library and IDPH are exploring a collaborative effort to distribute these health materials and resources to Iowa’s libraries.

Toward this end, IDPH has developed a short survey to gather input from Iowa’s public libraries.  The goal of this survey is to gauge your interest offering resources developed by IDPH within your library, as well as the types of health topics you would be most interested in. Click the link below, thanks in advance for your answers!

"Kernels" Quick Learning

Kernels

The State Library Education Team is excited to unveil “Kernels,” a new series of quick training for librarians.  Kernels serves up bite-sized information on all sorts of library-related topics.
An ongoing series of prerecorded videos, each half-hour installment offers an overview of a program, service, or methodology applied in a public library setting.

Kernels feature practicing librarians talking about what they’ve experienced, discovered, and attempted in their work.  By recording short videos, they are able to share ideas with colleagues, who can then adapt and apply those ideas in their own library.  Staff can earn 0.5 c.e. credit hours logging into their IALearns account, enrolling in a Kernels class, watching a video, and completing the evaluation.

There are currently five Kernels available on topics ranging from escape rooms, a cloud library service, storytime in a bag, and more.  We hope to release more Kernels on a monthly basis.  Browse the current topics and bookmark the link below to see future Kernels Quick Learning from the State Library

We need you to help us showcase Iowa library ingenuity,
so be sure to let State Library staff know if you have some Kernels to share!

Big Talk From Small Libraries

Friday February 26 (8:45AM—5:00PM)  Nebraska’s online conference is called “Big Talk From Small Libraries.” From their website: “…This free one-day online conference is aimed at librarians from small libraries—the smaller the better! Each of our speakers is from a library serving fewer than 10,000 people or directly works with small libraries. Topics range from technology to programming … this event is a great opportunity to learn about the innovative things your colleagues are doing in their small libraries.”

Big Talk From Small Libraries is broadcast online using GoToWebinar software.  GoToWebinar works on Windows, Mac, Google Chrome OS, Linux, iOS and Android devices. Login instructions will be emailed to registered attendees the day before the conference.  Like Iowa’s ILOC event, Nebraska does plan on recording all Big Talk sessions, with recordings posted to their conference website. You do not need to register for the conference to access the recordings.
