Reminder for Seasonal Systems

Seasonal systems are those public water supply systems that are not open all year, and include camps, parks, and golf courses.  Spring is on the horizon and it’s time to prepare for opening day.

Before starting operations for the season, the system must ensure it is able to provide safe water on the first day it serves water to the public.  The system must complete a Start Up Checklist, which includes a total coliform sample that is free of bacteria, and must submit the completed form to Iowa DNR before the opening day.  The seasonal system is sent a reminder letter at the beginning of the month before their opening month. The letter includes the Start Up Checklist.

Two videos made by Iowa DNR water supply program staff are available on the Iowa DNR website to assist water supply operators and owners.

  • Revised Total Coliform Rule (RTCR) Summary.  This video summarizes the Revised Total Coliform Rule (RTCR) that became effective in 2016.  The rule is designed to increase the protection of public health by reducing the potential pathways for bacteria to get into a drinking water system.
  • Revised Total Coliform Rule (RTCR) Level 1 Assessments and Start-up Procedures.  This video indicates the start-up procedures for seasonal supplies and Level 1 Assessments, which are requirements of the Revised Total Coliform Rule (RTCR).  The start-up procedures and Level 1 Assessments are both checklists that walk you through your water system and aid you in finding any issues that could be allowing contaminants to enter your system.
