Library News
The library is excited to announce that the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) has invited us to participate in the NLS Braille eReader Pilot Project. The pilot is currently scheduled to begin in June of 2020 and will last six months.
Our library is one of four Regional Libraries of NLS selected for Phase 1 of the pilot project. The other three libraries participating are:
- Kentucky Talking Book Library
- New Jersey State Library Talking Book and Braille Center
- Utah State Library Division
The purpose of the NLS Braille eReader Pilot is to test the functionality of the eReader devices, collect feedback from pilot patrons, and validate distribution processes at network libraries. The pilot libraries were selected based on criteria including region, circulation system, and size, and on their ability to meet reporting requirements and provide technical support during the pilot. The library will have more information as the pilot moves forward.
The NLS Braille eReader Pilot Project will lay the groundwork for the general distribution of braille eReaders, which will increase access to digital braille materials, promote braille literacy, and provide access to tens of thousands of braille titles in digital format, supporting the NLS mission statement of assuring that all may read.
