Governor Kim Reynolds Issues Proclamation Declaring Latino and Hispanic Heritage Month


2019 Latino Heritage Month Proclamation

 

Governor Kim Reynolds has issued a proclamation declaring September 15 through October 15, 2019, as Latino and Hispanic Heritage Month.  The text of the proclamation reads:

PROCLAMATION

      WHEREAS, Latinos and Hispanics have enriched Iowa communities
      since the late 1800’s and play a vital role in Iowa’s economy
      and workforce with cultural, educational, and political
      influences.  This can be seen and appreciated in all aspects of
      life; and

      WHEREAS, Iowans of Latino and Hispanic origin make up six percent
      of the state’s populations, making it the largest race or
      ethnic minoritized group in the state; and

      WHEREAS, Latinos are individuals that are from or are descendants
      from Latin America and may speak Creole, Dutch, English, Italian,
      Spanish, Patois, Portuguese, French, and many regional Indigenous
      languages such as Quechua, Aymara, Guarani, Mayan,  Nahuatl, and
      more; and

      WHEREAS, Hispanics are individuals that speak Spanish and are
      descendants from Spanish speaking countries, including Spain;
      and

      WHEREAS, Latino and Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to
      celebrate the vibrant traditions of people whose ancestry can be
      traced to the Caribbean Islands, Central America, Mexico, South
      America for Latinos, and Spain; and

      WHEREAS, in keeping with the 2019 national theme, “Latino and
      Hispanic Americans: A History of Serving Our Nation”, we
      celebrate more than 5,000 years of history and heritage of Latino
      and Hispanic Americans.

      NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kim Reynolds, Governor of the State of Iowa,
      do hereby proclaim September 15 to October 15, 2019, as

      LATINO AND HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
      in Iowa and urge citizens to observe this month by increasing
      their awareness of the valuable ways Latinos and Hispanics have
      contributed to our state’s prosperity.
