New Sedation Rules Effective August 21, 2019

Regulatory Update

Iowa Administrative Code 650 - Chapter 29, "Sedation and Nitrous Oxide"

The Iowa Dental Board's amendments to the regulations pertaining to the use of sedation and nitrous oxide in the practice of dentistry will go into effect on Wednesday, August 21, 2019.  The updates reflect current standards of practice and safety recommendations in the use of moderate sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia in dental offices.  The updates include:

  • Reorganization of the chapter for clarity.
  • Clarification of minimal sedation standards.
  • Updated standards for the use of moderate sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia in Iowa to reflect current practice and recommended safety standards.
  • Updated training requirements for staff who serve as patient monitors when moderate sedation, deep sedation or general anesthesia is administered.  The training requirements are intended to better prepare patient monitors to assist in recognizing and assisting with emergencies.
  • Established minimum requirements for the use of a separate anesthesia provider (e.g. anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist) to provide moderate sedation, deep sedation or general anesthesia in a dental facility.
