Primacy Approval for PWS Rules

On May 31, 2019, the DNR received full primacy under the Safe Drinking Water Act for several rules: Groundwater Rule, Lead and Copper Short-term Revisions and Clarifications, Revised Total Coliform Rule, Long-term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule, and Stage 2 Disinfection Byproducts Rule.

2019 Jordan Aquifer Stakeholder Report Now Available

The 2019 Jordan aquifer stakeholder report is now available on the DNR’s Water Allocation and Use webpage, under the “Program Information” tab. This annual report highlights the Jordan aquifer (also known as the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer) water use, water levels, rules, and other data collected in 2018. The report was compiled by Water Use Program staff using information received by Iowa’s Jordan aquifer water use permittees.

Some highlights from 2018:

  • A new record annual withdrawal rate from the Jordan aquifer occurred last year, exceeding 25.7 billion gallons.
  • Nine new Jordan aquifer water use wells were drilled in the state. Two for public water supplies, seven for ag-industrial uses.
  • A total of 268 approved static and pumping water levels were submitted to the Water Use Program. This equals about 75% of total number of permitted Jordan wells in Iowa.
  • Since 2014 a majority of permittees have decreased their water withdrawals from the Jordan aquifer. However, statewide this reduction is offset by a small number of permittees substantially increasing their withdrawals.

EPA Webinars on Updated Risk Assessment and Emergency Response Plan Tools

As part of the America’s Water Infrastructure Act (AWIA), all community public water supply systems serving at least 3,300 people must conduct a Risk and Resiliency Assessment of their system, incorporate findings into their Emergency Response Plan, and then certify to EPA that both the assessment and plan have been completed.  The assessment and plan must be re-certified every five years by the system.

To assist with this effort, EPA's Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water – Water Security Division will conduct a webinar to highlight tools that are available to assist drinking water systems in conducting a risk assessment and developing an emergency response plan, required by Section 2013 of the AWIA.  The webinar will be held two separate times, once in August and once in September.

EPA personnel will provide an overview of the updated Baseline Threat Document, Vulnerability Self-Assessment Tool and Emergency Response Plan Guidance.

The webinars, which will have the same content, will be held on August 22 and September 5, at noon – 1:30, CDT.  You will need to specify which date when you register.

Registration.
