The African American Museum of Iowa invites you to join them on
Monday, January 21, 2019 for a celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The Museum will be offering discounted admission at $1.00 per person from 10 am to 4 pm to honor Dr. King. In addition, the Museum is celebrating Dr. King’s message of peace by collaborating with Veterans for Peace Chapter #169 to create and decorate Peace Poles. The Veterans for Peace have made it their goal to put up as many Peace Poles as possible in the area and the Museum is supporting this goal by inviting patrons to help decorate Peace Poles on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day while they visit the Museum. The Museum will supply the poles and supplies, all we need is you and your creative ideas! Join us January 21 for learning, reflection, and crafting in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his vision of integration, and his teaching of peace.

Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission

The Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission will host two free public events on
January 17 and 18 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the downtown location of the Cedar Rapids Public Library.

The first event is a free showing of the documentary “I Am Not Your Negro” that will take place on Thursday, January 17 from 5:30 – 7:30 PM in the Whipple Auditorium of the Library. The documentary is based on James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript, Remember This House, and explores racism in America through Baldwin’s observations of American history, as well as through stories of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Medgar Evers. The film won the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary and was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 89th Academy Awards. This event is in partnership with the Cedar Rapids Public Library and the African American Museum of Iowa.

The second event is a Public Sector Job Fair that will take place on Friday, January 18 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the lobby of the library. In an effort to increase diversity in public sector jobs, representatives from various government agencies will be available to discuss current job openings and requirements for potential job offerings.
