Many water
systems have self-monitoring testing and reporting requirements included in
their water supply operation permit.
These are based on the type of treatment and the amount of water
produced or purchased. When recording
and reporting these results, please use the value exactly as it is shown on
your instrument. For example, when
measuring chlorine residuals with a colorimeter on low range, the result will
include two places after the decimal, such as 1.84 mg/L. Report that value. Do not round the value when it is reported on
the MOR (monthly operation report). If there
are any questions about what to report, please contact your local DNR Field
Office.
From ABC News Release, 3/19/2018
“DES MOINES – March 19, 2018 - The Association
of Boards of Certification (ABC) is pleased to announce that the Iowa
Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Operator Certification Program has been awarded
the 2018 Certification Program Award.
Chuck Gipp, Director of the Iowa DNR, and Laurie Sharp, head of the
Program, accepted the award at a special ceremony held at the Iowa DNR.
The Iowa DNR Operator Certification Program
was selected for their tradition of integrity, stakeholder involvement and
outreach, consultation and implementation with industry Model Standards,
and leadership and interaction with ABC.
“Iowa has always been a leader in the maintenance of a strong,
industry-driven Drinking Water and Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification
Program,” said Gipp. “This is rooted in our state’s understanding that a
competent, properly trained operator is the single most important factor in the
protection of our public’s health, the environment and Iowa’s water
infrastructure.”
Through Sharp’s leadership, the Program has
developed an online operator database connected to the State Drinking Water
Information System, set up an online exam process at their field and central offices,
implemented 5-year Iowa operator certification strategic plans, and continues
to improve operator training and continuing education processes.
“Over the past decade, the Iowa Program has
been recognized by its peers as a pioneer in embracing innovation throughout
its history,” said Paul Bishop, ABC President & CEO. “It continues to be a leading example for
state and provincial programs throughout North America.”
The Certification Program Award is presented to
an ABC member certifying authority in recognition of outstanding contribution
toward establishing or advancing the certification of environmental
professionals.”

The
rule changes to 567—Iowa Administrative Code Chapters 40-44, 81, and 83 were
approved by the Environmental Protection Commission at their March 20th meeting. The rules package, which includes the federal
Groundwater Rule, Lead and Copper Rule – Short-term Revisions, Revised Total
Coliform Rule, and many analytical methods changes, as well as changes to state
rules including construction standards, operator certification, environmental
lab certification, and other changes, was published in the Iowa Administrative
Bulletin on January 17, 2018, as a Notice of Intended Action.
There
were no comments received during the public comment period. There are two changes to the rules: the
inclusion of two sentences that were inadvertently omitted pertaining to the
5-year records retention period for membrane filtration plants under the
Groundwater Rule, and the correction of an analytical method number. Those two items are included with the rest of
the amendments in the final adopted and filed rules, which will be published in
the Iowa Administrative Bulletin on April 11, 2018, as Adopted and Filed.
The Iowa Environmental
Protection Commission approved the Clean Water SRF and Drinking Water SRF
Fourth Quarter Intended Use Plan updates for fiscal year 2018. The
Commission took the action on March 20, 2018 at their meeting in Des
Moines.
