We are very exited to introduce our new program, Iowa Human Rights Youth Chapters (IHRYChapters)

The IHRYChapters are youth (14 to 24 years of age) who are committed to creating awareness, education and advocacy for Human Rights in their local communities across Iowa.

Iowa Human Rights Youth Chapters get to:

      • Become an official Iowa Department of Human Rights partner.
      • Address their local Human Rights needs by developing and delivering youth led local activities, forums, campaigns, rallies, etc.
      • Participate in the Annual Statewide Human Rights Campaign in December
      • Highlight their chapter’s activities statewide.
      • Participate in a statewide Human Rights Awareness Campaign

We welcome Al Exito as our first Iowa Human Rights Youth Chapter!

This IHRYChapter is very active developing their leadership skills and performing many civic engagement activities in the community.

      Iowa Youth Congress (IYC)

The Iowa Youth Congress (IYC) was created in 2006 by the Iowa Department of Human Rights (DHR) in response to the under representation of minority members in Iowa’s Legislature. The IYC provides youth of all backgrounds the opportunity to gain hands-on education in the subject areas of state government, democracy, advocacy, and civic engagement.

Meet some of our IYC Members:

      morgan

Morgan Leigh Kurtz, Region Officer for the East Side of the state. She Attends Mid City High School in Davenport, IA.

In her own words: "To me, personally, Iowa Youth Congress means being the voice for people who want to see change in our youth. Being a person who helps encourage change with open arms and embracing new ideas, and I'm so happy to be a part of that. Iowa Youth Congress helps you express yourself with so many other people, no matter how alike or different you are."

      SIYAC

State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council (SIYAC)

The State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council (SIYAC) is a non-partisan policy advising organization comprised of young people from across Iowa between the ages of 14 and 20.  These youth leaders are selected to represent all Iowa youth and engage in topics important to young Iowans.  Concerns are drafted and shared with policy makers during the legislative session.

      What SIYAC members are saying:

       Nandini Jayaram

Nandini Jayaram is a Senior at Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf, IA.

      In her own words:

"Starting my third year on SIYAC, I can clearly see the measurable impact this Council has had on my life and how its affected my personal growth. SIYAC gives me the perfect balance between being actively engaged in my community through service projects, and having an outlet to passionately pursue a Sexual Assault bill. My interest in youth political involvement has flourished and SIYAC has helped show me how important it is to use your voice to advocate for issues."
