IDR Combats Fraud with W-2 Filing Requirement

Electronic submission of W-2s and 1099s is one of the most effective ways the Iowa Department of Revenue (IDR) can protect taxpayers from identity theft and tax refund fraud.

Beginning with Tax Year 2016, employers with Iowa withholding and W-2s for 50 or more employees are required to electronically file W-2 wage statements with IDR by January 31, 2017.  Employers or service providers acting on an employer’s behalf will access IDR’s eFile & Pay application to upload the necessary files.

W-2 wage statement filing for employers with fewer than 50 W-2s will be accepted electronically on a voluntary basis at this time.  However, beginning with Tax Year 2017, all employers with Iowa withholding will be required to electronically file W-2 wage statements by January 31.  Also beginning with Tax Year 2017, 1099 Information Return filing for businesses with Iowa withholding will be required and due by January 31.  Finally, in Tax Year 2017 IDR will offer a manual entry process for employers and service providers that have less than 50 records to submit.

A free online webinar is scheduled on December 14 from noon to 1:00 pm. The webinar will provide information about new requirements for submitting W-2s and 1099s to the Iowa Department of Revenue electronically.  For more details or to register, please visit http://www.iasourcelink.com/resources/business-webinars/iowa-tax-webinars
