The statutory mission of the Iowa Department of Revenue is to serve
Iowans and support state government by collecting all taxes required by
law, but no more.
Please be careful when responding to a contact that appears to be
from the Iowa Department of Revenue (IDR). While we make hundreds of legitimate contacts with taxpayers, we are also aware of
illegitimate contacts made by others pretending to represent IDR. Before
giving any information or making any payments, make sure you are actually
dealing with IDR. If you receive a call
from someone claiming to be with IDR, ask for the person’s name, the name of
their supervisor, and a return phone number, and offer to call them back.
We have recently been made aware of scam phone calls appearing to
come from our Taxpayer Services phone number of 515-281-3114. The caller
claims to be an officer with the Department, but is not affiliated with
IDR. The scammers have manipulated caller ID to show IDR’s number.
Here are some situations to watch out for:
-
Calls or e-mails seeking
personal information, demands for immediate payment, threatening arrest,
criminal prosecution, and account seizure. In some cases, the caller
ID or e-mail address may even appear to be from IDR.
- Calls or e-mails indicating a
refund or other payment to you is ready to be sent, but only if you
provide personal or bank account information.
- Calls or e-mails asking to
verify tax return information in order for the return to be processed.
