City Hall Anniversary Celebration Planned for Aug. 28
AMES, Iowa – The public is invited to an anniversary celebration on Thursday, Aug. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at City Hall, 515 Clark Ave., to celebrate 35 years of City Hall at its current location.
Cake and ice cream will be provided at the event, and self-guided tours will showcase changes to the facility. Interior renovations over the past decades were necessary to convert the school building to offices.
Ames City Hall officially opened its doors with a two-day community celebration on April 28-29, 1990. Those visiting the building may spot original features that honor the building’s past: hallway lockers, vintage light fixtures, and built-in bookshelves in the City Council Chambers that was once the school library. Additionally, the gymnasium and auditorium are still available for public use.
Although Ames City Hall officially marked its 35th anniversary in April, the celebration was postponed during a carpet replacement and wall painting project.
City Hall was originally constructed in 1937 as Ames High School. From 1961 to 1986, it served as Central Junior High School. The building sat empty for several years until Ames residents approved a $6.8 million bond referendum in 1988 to transform it into City Hall. The goal was to bring multiple City departments under one roof and give the historic building a new life.
