Public Meeting Planned for Agility Course
Ames Parks and Recreation Department is holding a public information meeting regarding the Carr Park Agility Course. The meeting is planned for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the Homewood Golf Course Clubhouse, 401 E. 20th St. The meeting will begin with a brief program followed by questions.
Carr Park is located at 1704 Meadowlane Ave. The agility course project includes the agility equipment as well as safety surfacing, a concrete border, a sidewalk connection along Meadowlane Avenue, and a neighborhood park shelter. An agility course typically consists of multiple pieces of equipment that allows users of all ages to exercise upper and lower body strength to complete multiple activities. Agility courses commonly feature an assortment of challenges including cargo nets, over-head ladders, balance beams, ledge hanger, spider walk, and others.
“The agility course planned at Carr Park would be the first of its kind in the park system,” said Parks and Facilities Superintendent Joshua Thompson. “This type of outdoor recreation option has proven popular across the country. It’s challenging for residents of all ages and promotes movement and strength-building.”
The project was first considered in 2021 and included a shelter with year-round restroom. Due to significant price increases of the agility equipment since 2021, the project was streamlined to a smaller park shelter without a restroom. A restroom could be reconsidered in future years. The project budget is $735,468.
The Parks and Recreation Department manages 40 parks and offers approximately 180 athletic, aquatic, instructional, and wellness programs. For more information, go to the Parks and Recreation homepage at www.amesparkrec.org or call the Community Center at 515.239.5350.
