Kapa‘a DMV expands appointment availability with month-long booking calendar
KAPAʻA – Residents can now book appointments at the Kapaʻa Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office up to a month in advance.
The new calendar, launched this morning, replaces the usual two-week booking window and runs through the end of November.
The change comes as appointments for the next two weeks are full and staff continues to prioritize residents whose driver's licenses expired after the Sept. 9 Kapule Building fire. About 75 new appointments open online each weekday at 4 a.m.
The Kapaʻa DMV reopens on today, Nov. 4, by appointment only.
Before the fire, the DMV had 16 service windows island-wide. The Kapaʻa office has three workstations at the moment. As the DMV works through the priority appointments, more appointments will open to the public. The County is also adding workstations, which will allow the DMV to offer more services and more appointments.
DMV staff directly contacted more than 1100 residents whose licenses expired during the DMV closure and scheduled their appointments first.
Residents trying to book an appointment should know:
- New appointments open each weekday at 4 a.m. at www.kauai.gov/DMV.
- One new day of appointments is added each weekday, about one month out.
- No new appointments are added on weekends or County holidays, including Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
- Appointments fill quickly. Residents who do not get one are encouraged to try the next weekday.
Residents whose licenses or permits are still valid are asked to wait to book, so appointments remain available for those who need them most.
“Mahalo to our community for your continued patience and understanding as we work to restore these important services,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami. “We know this has created challenges for many of our residents, and our team is working hard to serve the community with the limited capacity we have available.”
The County is also preparing the Gather space in Līhuʻe to serve as a temporary location for DMV services. An opening date has not been set. More information will be shared when it is available.
Online services and alternatives
Some services do not require an in-person appointment:
- Renew vehicle registration online at mvr.ehawaii.gov/renewals/kauai/lookup or at a self-service kiosk at Western Motors in Hanapēpē, Līhuʻe Safeway, Kapaʻa Safeway, or Princeville Foodland. The County is temporarily covering the $2.50 convenience fee for online vehicle registration renewals. Credit card and eCheck processing fees still apply.
- Request a duplicate driver’s license through the City and County of Honolulu’s online portal at mydmv.hnl.info/hnldl/duplicates. Only exact duplicates are available online. Name, address, and other changes must be made in person.
