Blessing held for Hanapēpē Baseyard renovation project
HANAPĒPĒ – The County of Kaua‘i held a blessing on Friday, October 30, to mark the nearing completion of the Hanapēpē Baseyard renovation project, which will provide improved workspaces and enhanced safety and security for Department of Public Works, Roads Division staff.
The Hanapēpē Baseyard serves as a critical hub for County field operations on the South and West sides of Kaua‘i, supporting essential services such as road maintenance, park upkeep, and levee work. The facility plays an important role in helping County crews maintain public infrastructure and respond to emergencies.
“Taking care of our County employees means making sure they have the facilities and support they need to do their jobs safely and effectively,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami. “Our crews work hard every day to keep our island moving and respond when our community needs them. These improvements are an investment in the people who provide these essential services.”
The renovation project, totaling approximately $1.1 million, focused on modernizing the baseyard to provide a safer, more functional workspace for County crews.
Improvements included replacing flooring throughout the offices; upgrading bathroom and locker room fixtures; repainting interior and exterior spaces; replacing picture windows; repairing exterior walls; reconfiguring existing spaces to better support operational needs; and adding a second entrance. Additional safety and security improvements included separating locker room and bathroom areas and installing a new perimeter fence around the baseyard and transfer station to better protect equipment and infrastructure.
Completed by Pacific Blue Construction, the renovation is expected to improve coordination, efficiency, and safety for the crews who rely on the facility each day. The County also recognizes Keith Perry for helping initiate the project and thanks Pacific Blue Construction for its expertise and flexibility throughout the renovation, as well as the Hanapēpē Baseyard crew for their patience and continued support during construction. The blessing was led by Kahu Sean Chun, with County officials, staff, and project partners gathering to offer blessings for the renovated facility and the employees who serve the community.
