Wastewater Spill at Kapaia Sewage Pump Station
KAPAIA – The public is advised of an estimated 1,000-gallon wastewater spill that occurred between approximately 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on June 30, 2026, in the vicinity of the Kapaia Sewage Pump Station (SPS), located near Kūhiō Highway and Ma‘alo Road.
The spill was caused by a communication failure between the pump station's control system and pumping equipment, resulting in elevated wastewater levels in the pump station wet well.
Wastewater eventually overflowed from a nearby sewer manhole onto the roadway, may have entered a nearby stream, and may have reached State waters. County crews promptly pumped down the wet well and ponded wastewater, disinfected the affected area, and are continuing response and cleanup efforts. The pump station is currently operating normally, and the communication issue has been resolved.
Anyone with questions may contact Donald Fujimoto with the Wastewater Management Division at 808-241-4083 or email dfujimoto@kauai.gov.
