Single Vehicle Crash Results in Serious Injury and Arrest
ANAHOLA – A single-vehicle traffic crash in Anahola on Saturday afternoon resulted in one serious injury and the arrest of the driver.
On March 28, 2026, at approximately 3:00 p.m., a 2002 Dodge pickup truck operated by a 61-year-old man was making a right turn onto Hokualele Road from Kūhiō Highway when the vehicle crossed over the center line and struck a guardrail.
A 46-year-old man who was seated in the cargo bed of the truck was ejected upon impact. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oʻahu for further treatment. Following the collision, the driver did not stop to render aid.
Traffic on Hokualele Road was diverted around the crash scene while the Kaua‘i Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
As a result of the investigation, the driver was arrested for Negligent Injury in the First Degree, Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant (OVUII), Reckless Driving, Inattention to Driving, and Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Substantial Bodily Injury. The driver was later identified as Roland Vierra, 61, of Anahola. Vierra was released pending further investigation, which is referred to as “RPI”. An RPI means that more time is needed, beyond the maximum 48 hours allowed in police custody, to investigate the case before formal charges are made.
The investigation remains ongoing.
