Kaua‘i Fire Department rescues hiking party from Kalalau Trail Saturday
HĀ‘ENA – The Kaua‘i Fire Department rescued a hiking party Saturday evening after one member of the group experienced an apparent medical emergency while hiking on the Kalalau Trail.
According to a preliminary report, shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 28, personnel with the Hanalei Fire Station and Rescue 3 responded to a report of a group of hikers needing assistance near Hanakāpī‘ai Beach along the Kalalau Trail.
According to officials, one member of the party, a 19-year-old female visitor, was reportedly experiencing dizziness and fatigue after an apparent seizure.
Upon arrival, the female visitor was found alert but tired and struggling to continue hiking. First responders provided hydration and evaluated the patient before assisting the four-person hiking party as they made their way out of the trail area.
Rescue personnel escorted the hikers safely back to the trailhead. The 19-year-old visitor declined further medical treatment at the scene.
The scene was cleared shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday.
The Kaua‘i Fire Department reminds hikers to plan ahead, bring sufficient water, and monitor physical conditions when hiking the Kalalau Trail, which can be strenuous and challenging even for experienced hikers.
