High Surf Warning in effect for Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau through
Saturday 6 p.m.
The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Warning for north- and west-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau currently in effect through 6 p.m. Saturday, February 7. The warning may be extended, dropped, or modified as conditions develop.
According to the NWS, a large west-northwest to northwest swell will build down the island chain this afternoon and tonight. Surf along north and west shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau will rise above advisory thresholds later this afternoon, with High Surf Warning level surf occurring tonight as this swell peaks. The swell will decline sharply Saturday afternoon and evening, with surf expected to fall below advisory levels by Sunday morning. Surf heights along north-facing shores are projected to reach 12 to 20 feet this afternoon and peaking at 20 to 25 feet tonight. Surf heights along west-facing are projected to reach 8 to 15 feet this afternoon and peaking at 15 to 20 feet tonight.
Entering the water in these areas during the High Surf Warning is very hazardous and could cause serious injury or death. Beachgoers are also advised to use extreme caution, as large breaking waves could make it dangerous for those standing along the shoreline.
