High Surf Warning in effect for Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau through Saturday 6 p.m.
The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Warning for north- and west-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau currently in effect through 6 p.m. Saturday, January 31. The warning may be extended, dropped, or modified as conditions develop.
According to the NWS, two significant northwest swells will impact the islands over the next couple of days. The first moderate to large, long period northwest swell is peaking early this morning. The second overlapping, larger, long period northwest swell will build today and peak late this afternoon into Saturday before subsiding through the rest of the weekend. The second swell will push surf heights above warning levels along all exposed north- and west-facing shores through Saturday. Surf heights along north-facing shores are projected to reach 20 to 30. Surf heights along west-facing shores are projected to reach 20 to 25 feet.
Entering the water in these areas during the High Surf Warning is very hazardous and could cause serious injury or death. Beachgoers are also advised to use extreme caution, as large breaking waves could make it dangerous for those standing along the shoreline.
