UPDATE: Search for missing man continues at Kahili Beach in Kīlauea
KīLAUEA — First responders will continue their search for the missing 19-year-old Kapa‘a resident Matthew Packard-Asai until sundown this evening, and resume at first light tomorrow, January 30.

Missing man identified; search continues Thursday morning
KīLAUEA — First responders continue to search for a missing fisherman at Kahili Beach in Kīlauea.
The missing man has been identified as 19-year-old Kapa‘a resident Matthew Packard-Asai.
According to a preliminary report, first responders received a report of two fisherman being swept into the water shortly after 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28.
Personnel with the Kaua‘i Fire Department, Kaua‘i Police Department, American Medical Response, U.S. Coast Guard, Kaua‘i Search and Rescue, the Salvation Army, and State officials responded to the incident.
First responders arrived on scene and safely brought one individual back to shore. Upon arriving on shore, who sustained a laceration to the leg, was transferred to American Medical Response for further medical care.
Personnel with the Kaua‘i Police Department and Kaua‘i Search and Rescue continued their search through the night using drones with heat signature technology.
First responders continue searching for the second individual, who remains missing.
The multi-agency search remains ongoing. Additional updates will be provided as information becomes available.
