Firefighters extinguish structure fire in Kalāheo Tuesday
KALĀHEO – Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters extinguished a structure fire in Kalāheo on Tuesday, December 16.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a structure fire at the Kaua‘i Sea Farm aquaculture facility on the eastern shore of Nomilu Fishpond in Kalāheo on Tuesday shortly after 7:30 a.m.
Personnel with the Kalāheo, Hanapēpē, and Waimea fire stations, the Fire Prevention Bureau, and the on-duty Battalion Chief responded to the incident.
According to a preliminary report, firefighters arrived on scene shortly after 7:50 a.m. and found a one-story structure actively on fire, with the blaze originating on the first floor and spreading beyond the building of origin.
Crews quickly initiated fire suppression efforts and successfully contained and extinguished the fire despite several challenging conditions, including an inadequate private water supply, a combustible roof assembly, and limited access for fire department apparatus. Firefighters were also able to leverage the newly placed-in-service 4x4-capable Water Tanker 5 from Kalāheo, which was able to navigate the muddy, limited-access road that standard fire engines could not, helping prevent further spread and additional damage.
KFD Fire Prevention Bureau investigators took over the scene and conducted an investigation.
Firefighters cleared the scene shortly after 10:40 a.m.
Damages to the structure and contents are estimated at $144,000.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
