OED accepting applications for 4th annual Youth Climate Class
LĪHU‘E – The Office of Economic Development is now accepting applications for the 4th annual Youth Climate Class beginning in February 2026.
This hands-on, island-wide program is open to high school students across Kaua‘i who are interested in learning how climate initiatives are implemented at the community level. Participants will travel around the island, meet local leaders, and explore six core sustainability focus areas:
- Clean Energy
- Natural Resource Management
- Waste Reduction
- Local Food
- Smart, Sustainable Communities
- Green Workforce & Education
Beyond the classroom, students will take part in field trips and gain real-world experience by partnering with a local business of their choice. Working together, students will help businesses complete 10 foundational green actions, leading to official recognition through the Hawai‘i Green Business Program. Along the way, students will build professional skills and gain valuable, résumé-ready experience.
This no-cost program is open to all Kaua‘i high school students, with enrollment limited to 15 participants. The class runs for one semester and meets once a week on Wednesdays after 3:30 p.m., with occasional weekend sessions depending on community partner availability. “This class gives students the opportunity to see themselves as part of the solution,” said Nalani Brun, Director of the Office of Economic Development. “It’s about learning by doing, connecting with the land, and discovering how their ideas can help shape a more resilient future for Kaua‘i.”
Applications must be submitted online through the 2026 Youth Climate Class Application by January 9 at 11:59 p.m. and space is limited. Students interested in sustainability, future career pathways, or making a meaningful impact are encouraged to apply early.
