Distressed hiker rescued on Kalalau Trail Wednesday
LĪHU‘E — Personnel from the Kaua‘i Fire Department rescued a 40-year-old female Oahu resident from the Kalalau Trail on Wednesday, November 19, after she reported being unable to hike out due ankle pain from a preexisting ankle injury.
At approximately 9 a.m., KFD dispatch received a text-to-911 message from the hiker indicating she was unable to safely self-evacuate.
Personnel with the Līhu‘e Fire Station aboard Air 1 responded to the incident shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
First responders arrived on scene near the red hill landing zone and discovered the hiker, who was ambulatory. The hiker was able to walk unassisted to Air 1, but in accordance with safety procedures, rescuers escorted her into the helicopter, which then transported her to Princeville Airport. Upon landing at the Princeville Airport, the hiker was transferred to Princeville fire station personnel and American Medical Response. The hiker refused further medical care.
The scene was cleared shortly after 11 a.m.
