KPD Hosts Groundbreaking Ceremony for New K-PAL Sports Complex
LĪHUʻE – The Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) held a groundbreaking and blessing ceremony today at Vidinha Stadium to celebrate the beginning of construction on the new K-PAL Sports Complex.
The 4,000-square-foot facility will be a hub for youth athletic and mentorship programs and will feature three dedicated training bays for boxing, wrestling & jiu-jitsu, and a weightroom and fitness area.
“This project is the result of years of planning, partnerships, and persistence,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami. “K-PAL has long been a cornerstone of positive youth development on our island, and this new facility will expand the program’s reach and impact in incredible ways.”
The location has a meaningful history, having served as the KPD’s weight room for over 50 years. When the department relocated from Umi Street to its current headquarters, the building was transferred to K-PAL to continue its mission of empowering youth through sports and mentorship.
Planning for the new complex began in 2014 and gained new momentum with the support of Mayor Kawakami. The project’s construction is anticipated to be completed by March 2026.
Last year, more than 1,100 youth participated in K-PAL programs including flag football, boxing, jiu-jitsu, and wrestling. With strong partnerships across local schools, businesses, and community organizations, K-PAL provides an environment that encourages youth to lead drug-free lives, build self-confidence, and develop into positive community leaders.
“We’re building more than just a facility; we’re building futures,” said Deputy Chief Mark Ozaki. “This place exists because of the hard work and vision of those who came before us. I want to especially recognize retired Chief Michael Contrades, whose foresight, leadership, and tireless commitment were the driving force behind the success of this project.”
