County warns public ‘E-Z Pass’ scam
LĪHUʻE – The County of Kaua‘i warns the public of a new scam circulating in the community.
The scam involves a text message from individuals posing as representatives from the County of Kaua‘i’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The message states that the victim must settle an “E-Z Pass lane debt” to avoid fines and the suspension of driving privileges.
A link in the text directs customers to a clone website, hoping that victims will enter their credit card details and update their profiles, thereby obtaining their personal and credit card information.
Please be on alert for this scam and any others asking for your personal information without properly verifying the source first.
Key tips to avoid falling victim:
- All official communication from the County will be sent by mail, not over the phone.
- If in doubt, never text or call back, and contact the Kaua‘i Police Department directly at 808-241-1711.
- Be cautious of high-pressure tactics and urgent payment requests.
- Do not share personal or financial information with unknown callers.
Family members and caretakers of elderly residents are encouraged to review these scam warnings with loved ones. If you receive unsolicited calls or texts demanding payment, hang up immediately, do not open links, and report any suspicious calls or messages to KPD Dispatch at 808-241-1711.
