Police arrest suspect linked to counterfeit jewelry scam
LĪHUʻE – Police have arrested a suspect involved in a counterfeit jewelry scam, just days after issuing a public warning.
On Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025, at approximately 6 p.m., police responded to a report of two male suspects attempting to sell counterfeit gold jewelry to customers in the Walmart parking lot, claiming they needed cash to repair their vehicle. The suspects left the scene prior to police arrival, but officers were able to obtain a description of their vehicle.
On Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025, police apprehended 29-year-old Remus Miclescu, a Romanian national residing in Washington State. He was arrested for the offenses of Driving Without a Valid Driver’s License and Theft in the Third Degree. Miclescu was Released on Recognizance, meaning he was granted release from custody without bail based on his written promise to appear at all scheduled court proceedings.
These fraudulent activities bear striking similarities to incidents that occurred in 2022 when the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) successfully apprehended four male suspects engaged in the sale of counterfeit jewelry. Operating under the guise of selling rare or antique pieces at significantly reduced prices, these individuals targeted unsuspecting victims in public venues and residential areas. Victims, believing they were aiding apparent visitors in financial distress, later discovered the jewelry to be counterfeit.
"These types of scams prey on the generosity and aloha spirit of our community," said Lieutenant Kennison Nagahisa of KPD’s Criminal Investigations Division. "Thanks to the public's vigilance and swift response, this case sends a powerful message that our community will not tolerate such crimes.”
